Laser Hair Removal works by selectively concentrating light energy in the hair follicle, leaving the surrounding skin unchanged. Laser Hair removal can be performed on any area of the face or body and is faster and easier than other methods of hair removal.

The ND.YAG laser is one of the best lasers for hair removal in the world. It is very gentle on the skin as it targets each hair individually. We use this method for the face.

How does it work?

The hair has three stages in its life cycle:
  • Anagen is the active stage when new hair is growing and has the most amount of pigmentation (known as melanin)
  • Catagen is the relaxed stage when no hair is growing
  • Telogen is the shedding stage when hair has come to the end of its life
Laser hair removal works best when the hair is in its anagen (growing) stage. Laser light energy is targeted directly to the hair and is attracted to the melanin, so heating the hair follicle, which is destroyed. If there is no follicle, no hair can grow. Darker hair colours attracts a greater absorption of this light energy, so laser treatment cannot work on white or grey hairs. Different light wavelengths need to be used depending on hair colour and skin colour.

The head of the laser is placed directly on the area to be treated. The laser is fired and a small pricking sensation will be felt, although this sensation is usually well tolerated. Even though the laser burns the hair follicle, the surrounding skin remains unchanged for two reasons: the skin does not have as much melanin as the hair, so the light energy is drawn to the hair, and the treated area is cooled by a cooling unit that blows cold air onto the skin.
